What does the number mean?
TeraPing estimates round-trip latency: the time a small message takes to travel to a destination and back. It is shown in milliseconds (ms). Lower latency generally means a more responsive connection. The map is free to explore and does not require an account.
How are estimates created?
We use recent network measurements from Globalping to model how latency varies between places. The map helps you compare locations and explore possible connections. Selecting two pins does not run a direct test between them.
Actual results depend on the networks and routes involved, congestion, and your local connection. Estimates are less certain where measurements are sparse. The displayed range is an approximate indication of variation, not a guaranteed interval or a promise of accuracy for every route.
Reading the map
- White dots
- Locations where source measurements were collected. Nearby homes and businesses may use different networks.
- Color
- Estimated latency from your selected origin. The legend runs from lower to higher delay.
- Faint color
- Estimates extend beyond tested locations with less direct measurement support.
- Unshaded areas
- Limited or unavailable coverage. They do not indicate an outage.
- The dotted line
- A visual connection between your pins. Internet traffic can follow a different path.
Your connection adjustment
When an approximate network location is available, a brief browser check helps estimate extra delay associated with your connection. The adjustment can include Wi-Fi, ISP routing, VPNs, and browser timing. It is an approximation, not an isolated measurement of any one component.
Moving the origin pin switches to a connection scenario or a custom adjustment. Connection-type presets are illustrative allowances; two fiber or cable connections can perform differently. A shared route preserves the selected settings, while its estimate may change as measurements update.
Freshness and coverage
The map refreshes its data automatically and shows the timestamp of the loaded update. Delayed updates are labeled. Recent measurements inform the estimates; where recent evidence is unavailable, a result may be unavailable too. Smooth shading does not add new measurements.
Use the map to plan, then test the service
TeraPing can help shortlist a hosting region, compare locations for remote work, or understand why a distant game server may respond more slowly. Test the actual application or server before making a decision that depends on a particular latency.
